About the course
Berwick Montuna Golf Club sits on both sides of Cardinia Creek at Guys Hill, about five minutes' drive from Berwick in Melbourne's south-east. The course began as "Montuna", a public links that brothers Ernest and Herbert Luke built on the family farm and opened in November 1929; the name came from the two youngest Luke children, Monty and Una. When ill health forced the Lukes to close it, a group of local golfers formed a club and bought the property, and members began running the course themselves through working bees in 1946. The club gives 1947 as its founding year. The clubhouse was completed in 1969 and last refurbished in 2007.
The 18-hole course is a par 69 of about 5,000 metres from the blue tees, with Santa Ana couch fairways, and hosts the Steve Allan Junior tournament each year.
- 1st: a 269-metre par 4 that long hitters can drive, with out of bounds along the left and bunkers short of the green.
- 10th: the signature hole, a 354-metre par 4 dogleg where big hitters can try to carry water to cut the corner, with another hazard through the back of the fairway.
Green fee players are welcome and can book online up to seven days ahead. Visitor times are all day Monday, Friday and Sunday, after 9:30am Tuesday to Thursday (and before 7:30am Wednesday) and after 12:30pm Saturday. Weekday fees are $45 for 18 holes and $28 for nine, rising to $55 and $38 on weekends and public holidays. Carts with GPS cost $50 for 18 holes and clubs with a buggy $20; carts can be banned after heavy rain in winter. Social groups are welcome and the club publishes a dress code.
The licensed driving range is open seven days and has TopTracer bays. The pro shop handles bookings, lessons, club fitting, repairs and hire, and the clubhouse bar and lounge, with an outdoor area overlooking the 7th fairway, is open to visitors on set days.
