About the course

Waterford Valley is a pay-for-play public course at Knoxfield in Melbourne's outer east, about 30 minutes from the CBD. Owner Gary Thompson designed it with golf course architect Phil Ryan to championship requirements. It was Ryan's first fully compliant championship design, and he has since designed and built more than 40 courses in Asia.

The 18-hole layout is par 72 and measures 6,545 metres from the back, though it can be set up as short as 5,600 metres depending on the players and the wind. There are five sets of tees, black, blue, white, yellow and red, and the black tees are rated six shots harder than the blue. Water is a big part of the course, with 11 lakes and wetlands, and there are 63 bunkers. The fairways have wide landing areas for the drive and the bent grass greens are large. The design target is for a 15-handicapper playing the blue tees in calm conditions to score 36 points.

The course is open to the public seven days a week: from 7am to 6pm between April and September, and from 7am on weekdays and 6am at weekends until 7pm from October to March. Bookings are taken by phone only. A full fleet of motorised carts is available, and scooters are not allowed on the course.

The club has a pro shop and a licensed café serving lunchtime snacks, along with function facilities for corporate golf days and events. Memberships are also offered.
