About the course
Ranfurlie Golf Club is a private members' club on the Cranbourne-Frankston Road at Cranbourne, in Melbourne's south-east, and is part of the Amstel Club. Mike Clayton designed the course in 2001, the design firm OCCM later reviewed it, and Clayton DeVries & Pont now advise the club on its continuing refinement.
The course follows sandbelt principles: wide fairways in the spirit of Alister MacKenzie's work at Royal Melbourne, some stretches that recall Kingston Heath, and bunkers cut right up to the edges of the greens. The design often makes the edges of a fairway, rather than the middle, the better place to approach from. The land is open and planted with native eucalypts, on a mix of sandy, rocky and loam soils.
Visitors can play at restricted times on Mondays and Fridays, plus limited Sunday midday times when available. Interstate and overseas visitors and prospective members are welcome, and corporate, social and trade groups can book up to a year ahead at a reduced group rate. Tee times are booked through the pro shop on (03) 9788 8288 or proshop@ranfurlie.com.au; green fees are not published online.
Ranfurlie Range, the club's driving range, is open to the public seven days and nights a week. Its 20 undercover bays are fitted with Inrange ball-tracking technology, and there are premium rooms with food and drink service, a public putting green free with any range purchase, free club hire for juniors, a golf academy and a licensed sports bar. Members also have a short game area and their own practice green. The pro shop sells current and ex-demonstration equipment, and the clubhouse has a sports bar, members' lounge, restaurant and function rooms looking over the course to the city skyline.
