About the course

Bright Country Golf Club sits between Bright and Porepunkah in Victoria's High Country, on the banks of the Ovens River. The club was founded in 1909 by local businessmen, and its first recorded meeting was held at the Alpine Hotel in April 1910. For decades it played on private farmland along what is now Mt Porepunkah Road, buying its own land in 1937 and 1950 and converting a house into a clubhouse in 1953. After the 1982 bushfires burnt a pine plantation on Back Porepunkah Road, the club pursued that site, earthworks began in 1985 and by 1987 it held the 50-hectare property where the current course was built, largely by volunteers. The club has more than 520 members and hosted the 2002 Victorian Senior Amateur Championships.

The 18-hole, par 72 course was designed by Tony Cashmore, and later work follows his course development plan. It is flat to gently undulating on the valley floor, with the Alps on every side. The Ovens River is in play on several holes, along with water features, bunkers and some tree-lined corridors. Fairways are native couch, and greens and tees are bent grass. The course is walkable.

Visitors are welcome seven days a week. Weekday green fees on the club's online booking page are $50 for 18 holes and $30 for nine; fees can also be paid at the pro shop on arrival. Bookings are recommended on weekends and competition days, and golf carts can be hired.

PGA professional Greg Allan gives weekly lessons for all ages and abilities. The clubhouse has a bar serving drinks and light food, and a deck overlooking the course, and it is available for private functions.
