About the course
Myrtleford Golf Club is in the Ovens Valley in Victoria's north east, on O'Donnell Avenue in Myrtleford. It is a volunteer-run club with an 18-hole grass green course whose fairways are lined with trees, including river red gums the club says are reputed to be 300 years old. Most of the course is flat, with only the 9th and 18th climbing a hill, and the backdrop of surrounding hills makes the ball easy to follow in flight.
The course is a par 71 of about 5,700 metres from the men's tees. Accuracy counts for more than length: the fairways are narrow and the greens small. The 9th has the only sand bunker on the course, while grass bunkers and mounds guard several other greens, and water comes into play on the back nine.
- 1st: a 130-metre par 3 from an elevated tee to a raised green.
- 5th: a 390-metre par 4 the club describes as one of its toughest driving holes.
- 15th: the stroke index 1 hole, a 400-metre par 4 with a trout stream down the left.
- 18th: a 392-metre uphill par 4 with out of bounds along the left.
Visitors are welcome most days and social golf is generally available daily, but the club asks for bookings in advance through the form on its website, which also takes bookings for motorised carts and pull trolleys. Hire clubs are available. Women's competitions are on Tuesdays and Thursdays and men's on Wednesdays and Saturdays, and players with a registered handicap at another club can enter by paying the competition fee plus a $20 green fee.
The air-conditioned clubhouse has a licensed bar and a balcony overlooking the 18th green, and is staffed by volunteers on competition days and at busy times. It can be hired for functions and corporate golf days. There is a practice green and practice nets.
