About the course
Cheltenham Golf Club is a nine-hole course in the Melbourne sandbelt, on Victor Avenue in Cheltenham, about 30 minutes south of the CBD. A group of local citizens met in 1926 to consider a golf club on what was then largely wasteland parkland, paying a guinea each and doing the early work through working bees. The club began in 1930, and with help from the newly formed Victoria Golf Club, curator Frank Lennox and David (Jock) Whillans laid out a nine-hole course that was ready for play in 1936. The club bought part of Victoria's old tennis courts for a clubhouse in 1939 and plants more than 300 native trees and shrubs each year. Geoff Ogilvy and Matt Griffin are among the professionals who came through the club.
The course sits on gently rolling, sand-based ground that drains well and plays firm and fast. The holes are short, but tight tree-lined fairways, undulating greens and bunkering keep it testing. Since March 2025 the 9th has been played as a temporary par 3, to stop balls leaving the property.
Visitors can play during set public times: all day Sunday and Friday, from 11:30am Monday and Wednesday, from 3pm Tuesday, from 3:15pm Thursday and from 3:30pm Saturday. Green fee bookings are limited to nine holes: $41 on weekdays and $45 on weekends, with senior, concession and junior rates and a 10% surcharge on public holidays. Twilight golf costs $32. Electric carts, hire clubs and $5 pull buggies are available, and a round takes about two hours. Collared shirts are required, and denim, gym wear and singlets are not allowed.
There are three practice nets and a nine-hole putting green beside the first tee. The pro shop opens daily from 7am to 6pm, and the clubhouse bar serves grab-and-go food, open from 10am until 7pm Sunday to Thursday and 8pm on Fridays and Saturdays.
