About the course
The Royal Melbourne Golf Club was established in 1891, opening its first course at Caulfield in July that year, and received its Royal prefix from Queen Victoria in 1895. The club moved to Sandringham in 1901 and began its current Black Rock courses after Dr Alister MacKenzie produced a routing for the West Course in 1926, with construction supervised by member Alex Russell, the 1924 Australian Open champion. Russell then designed the East Course, with head greenkeeper Mick Morcom building greens and bunkers. The club gives 1931 as the West's opening year and 1932 for the East. A Composite course of 12 West and six East holes was created for the 1959 Canada Cup.
Royal Melbourne has hosted the men's Australian Open 17 times, most recently in 2025, as well as the 1998 Presidents Cup, the 1972 World Cup and the 2012 Women's Australian Open.
- West Course: par 72, 6,077 metres from the blue tees, with large, heavily contoured greens, bold bunkering and mostly doglegged holes. The 6th is a 391-metre dogleg par 4, and the 16th, at 202 metres, is the longest par 3 on either course.
- East Course: par 71, 6,007 metres, with smaller, sloping greens. The 17th, at 520 metres, is the longest hole on either course, and the 16th is a 151-metre par 3 with a deep bunker cutting into the green.
- Composite Course: par 72, 6,401 metres from the blue tees.
Royal Melbourne is a private members' club. Interstate and international golfers who belong to another club can request tee times online after a verification step, with visitor times considered on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays, excluding public holidays. Members of reciprocal clubs book under their club's playing agreement, and groups of more than eight contact the club directly. The club publishes caddie rates for visitors, and expects dress and conduct in keeping with its history.
The club has a professional's golf shop, and its current clubhouse was unveiled in 2003.
Green fees
Interstate and international golfers who belong to another club can request tee times (Mon, Tue and Fri, not public holidays); no green fees published; caddie $220 per 18 holes for one player, $270 for one caddie shared by two players (2025-26), cash only
