About the course
Sandy Golf Links sits on Cheltenham Road in Cheltenham, in Melbourne's south-eastern Sandbelt, on land that Sandringham City Council bought from the Royal Melbourne Golf Club in 1945. Vern Morcom designed a nine-hole public course that opened in 1946, and holes were added until, by 1951, it had become the 18-hole Sandringham Golf Course. Between 2017 and 2019 the Victorian Government funded the site's conversion into the Australian Golf Centre, and Mike Cocking and Geoff Ogilvy of OCM Golf redesigned the course from scratch in 2020. It reopened as Sandy Golf Links and is maintained by the Royal Melbourne greenkeeping team.
The new layout has no par 5s. It is built around short par 3s and par 4s, with sandy waste areas, fairway bunkers, firm and fast greens, and holes that climb and fall. Wind plays a part, particularly on the 9th and 11th.
- 7th: the only hole without a greenside bunker; mounding at the front deflects tee shots.
- 8th: the longest par 4, played uphill.
- 11th: the longest par 3, usually into the wind.
- 14th: a par 3 with a Redan-style green falling hard from left to right.
- 18th: a short par 4 that long hitters may drive, to a green sloping steeply right to left.
There are no memberships, and anyone can book a tee time online up to seven days ahead, with a full refund for cancellations made at least 24 hours out. Weekday fees are $70 for 18 holes and $47 for nine, and $76 for 18 at weekends. Bayside residents who register in person with ID receive a $2.50 discount. Carts, buggies and hire clubs are available, and dress is modern casual with closed shoes; singlets and hi-vis are not allowed.
The range has 30 covered bays facing a practice fairway with target greens and bunkers, and stays open into the evening. PGA coaching and club fitting are offered on site, and the licensed Sandy Links Café opens daily from 6.30am to 8pm, with a drinks cart running on the course.
