About the course

The Victoria Golf Club was founded on 6 March 1903 by William Meader at Fisherman's Bend, Port Melbourne, and moved to its present 128-acre site at Cheltenham in the Sandbelt in 1926. The course opened on 14 May 1927, when Prime Minister Stanley Bruce hit the first ball. Meader and club captain Oscar Damman drew up the original design, and Dr Alister MacKenzie was commissioned in 1926 to complete it, adding the strategic bunkering, which was essentially finished by 1935. A restoration of the bunkers led by Mike Clayton ran from 1996 to 2019.

Victoria has hosted the Australian Open in 1961, 1981, 2002, 2022 and 2024, the Women's Australian Open four times, the Australian Masters in 2010 and 2011, and the 1999 Australian PGA. Life member Peter Thomson won the British Open in 1954, the same year Doug Bachli became the first Australian to win the British Amateur, and Geoff Ogilvy, the 2006 US Open champion, is also a member.

From the silver tees the course measures 6,304 metres.

  • 4th: a 164-metre par 3 with bunkers either side of the green.
  • 9th: at 554 metres the longest hole, said to be the longest hole in women's competition golf.
  • 15th: a 289-metre par 4 where the sensible line is well right, leaving a short iron.
  • 18th: a 461-metre par 5 with an uphill drive between bunkers to a heavily bunkered green.

Victoria is a private members' club. International and interstate golfers who belong to a recognised club can request a tee time online after a verification step, and reciprocal club members can book under the club's agreement. Groups of more than eight contact the golf shop. Visitors must follow the dress and conduct standards in the club's visitor brochure.

Practice facilities include a driving range below the 18th with grass and mat tees and three covered bays in the teaching centre, a short game area with two bunkers, a putting green in front of the clubhouse and three practice nets. Tuition is available through the club's professionals.
