About the course
Commonwealth Golf Club is a private members' club in the Melbourne sandbelt, on Glennie Avenue in Oakleigh South. It grew out of the Murrumbeena Golf Club, which had six holes in Flatman's Paddock before 1914, and then the Waverley Golf Club, whose professional Sam Bennett laid out 18 holes near Darling station by 1915. Commonwealth was formed in April 1920 and bought 89 acres of scrub near Centre and Warrigal Roads. Play began in February 1921, and 18 holes were in use by early 1924.
Captain Charles Lane studied course design in England in 1926, including time in Harry Colt's office, and returned to refine the greens and bunkers. Secretary Sloan Morpeth then led a three-year rebuild of all 18 greens and the bunkering, completed in 1938, and redesigned the 10th and 11th in the 1960s. Peter Thomson won the 1967 Australian Open here, and the club has also hosted the Women's Australian Open in 2010 and 2011 and the Australian Amateur, most recently in 2025. From 2021, with guidance from Tom Doak, Renaissance Golf Design restored lost features and replaced every putting surface.
- 1st: a 250-metre par 4 that can be driven, to a small green sloping away.
- 6th: a 531-metre par 5, a genuine three-shotter into a southerly wind.
- 15th: a 143-metre par 3 played over a rise, one of the club's signature holes.
- 16th: a par 4 of up to 361 metres around the natural lake, with the green perched on a hill.
Members of reciprocal clubs and interstate and international visitors can request tee times through the club's online visitor booking, subject to availability. Victorian visitors can play only as a member's guest. It is a walking course, but a few ride-on carts, electric buggies, caddies and hire clubs are available on request. The dress code is smart golf attire, metal spikes are banned, and rounds should take four hours.
The driving range, chipping area and putting green are for members and invited guests, and practice balls are free from the golf shop. The clubhouse is open from 7am to 7pm daily, and PGA professionals teach members and non-members.
Green fees
Interstate, international and reciprocal visitors by request; Victorians as member guests only
