About the course
Cohuna Golf & Bowls Club sits on Gunbower Island in Victoria's Murray River region, a short drive from Echuca and Bendigo. The course has been cut out of the Gunbower forest, with its fairways and greens laid out among old river red gums beside Gunbower Creek, and it is the home course of Australian tour professional Stuart Appleby. Kangaroos, river birds and the odd emu are regular company on a round.
The 18 holes are fully irrigated and play to par 72 over 5,960 metres. The ground is fairly flat with gentle undulations, a few holes run along the creek and bunkers are used sparingly. The main defence is the timber: the fairways are tight and lined with mature gums, so a missed fairway often leaves no clear line to the green.
- 9th: a 460-metre par 5 that closes the front nine, with a fairway bunker 100 metres short of the green and bunkers either side of it.
- 10th: the longest hole, a 492-metre par 5 that doglegs gently left, narrowing at about 200 metres off the tee.
- 18th: the club's signature hole, a 318-metre par 4 bending left with Gunbower Creek on the left and the clubhouse behind the green.
The course is public and open seven days a week from sunrise to sunset; the clubhouse opens on event days and weekends, and visitors are welcome in the weekly competitions. Green fees are $50 for 18 holes and $35 for nine, with carts $50 for 18 holes and $30 for nine. Groups of ten or more pay $40 a player, members of reciprocal clubs pay half the green fee, and bookings are by phone. There is a practice fairway, a putting green, cart and buggy hire, a licensed bar open at selected times and a barbecue on request. The club can help put together accommodation for golf trips.
