About the course
Huntingdale Golf Club sits on Windsor Avenue in Oakleigh South, in Melbourne's sandbelt. Its roots go back to the Surrey Hills Golf Club of 1896, which disbanded at the start of the First World War. Former members later formed the Box Hill Golf Club, and in 1924 the club moved to leased orchard land on Doncaster Road as Eastern Golf Club. In 1938 the old Melbourne Hunt Club grounds at East Oakleigh came up for sale, and the course there opened in 1941, when the club took the name Huntingdale.
The English architect C.H. Alison designed the course from contour plans, models and written descriptions of the ground, and curator Sam Beriman adapted his plans on site. The layout is known for its strategic fairway bunkering and large, undulating greens. Huntingdale first hosted the Australian Masters in March 1979, was named the event's home in 2008 after 30 years, and has staged it 31 times in all, including November 2015, when Peter Senior won his third Masters.
Huntingdale is a private club, open only to members and their guests. Limited tee times are offered on request to interstate and overseas golfers who belong to a registered club, and to members of reciprocal clubs. Visitors must provide a letter of introduction and handicap confirmation from their home club, and the request form lists Monday, Tuesday afternoon, Wednesday and Friday as the days to choose from. Visitor play has been restricted during course renovation works. Hire clubs can be requested, and motorised carts are available only with a medical certificate.
A new $12 million clubhouse, with a new car park and renovated golf shop, was completed in August 2014. The golf shop, run by the head professional, offers tuition, and visitors can ask for a lunch table booking when they request a tee time.
