About the course
The Metropolitan Golf Club at Oakleigh South traces its roots to the Melbourne Golf Club of 1891. When housing took over the Malvern course in 1901, some members formed the Caulfield Golf Club, which bought a farm at Oakleigh in 1906 and began play there as The Metropolitan Golf Club in 1908, on a course designed by member and engineer J. B. MacKenzie. Dr Alister MacKenzie visited in 1926 and recommended changes, Dick Wilson designed new holes in 1960 after land was lost to a school, and Michael Clayton reworked holes 12 to 14 in 2005 and 2006. A greens restoration and course plan drawing on MacKenzie's ideas began in 2023, and the course reopened in March 2025.
The club has hosted eight Australian Opens, the first in 1930, along with the Australian Masters, the 2001 WGC Match Play and the 2018 World Cup of Golf. The par 72 Sandbelt course also has a 19th hole, a 181-metre par 3 played uphill.
- 2nd: a 160-metre par 3 that MacKenzie singled out during his 1926 visit.
- 5th: a 378-metre par 4, among the club's best-known holes.
- 14th: a 546-metre par 5, the last of four on the course.
- 15th: a 427-metre par 4 the club rates its most demanding two-shotter.
- 18th: a 450-metre par 4 finishing hole.
Metropolitan is a private club. Visitors must belong to an interstate or overseas club and hold a registered handicap, and request tee times online: domestic reciprocal members up to three months ahead, international reciprocal members up to six months, and other visitors up to 12 months. Groups of more than eight book through the corporate team, and visitors must follow the club's dress standards.
The club's professionals run lessons and development programs for juniors, women and adults, and the golf shop stocks equipment, apparel and gifts. A new clubhouse opened in 2013, followed by a golf services wing in 2016.
