About the course
Grampians Golf Club lies at the foot of Mount Abrupt (Mud-Dadjug) at the southern end of the Grampians National Park, about 5 km from Dunkeld. Founding members cleared the course from bushland, and it was officially opened on 29 October 1967 by the Governor of Victoria, Sir Rohan Delacombe. An exhibition match followed between Peter Thomson, Peter Townsend and the English professionals Guy Wolstenholme and Alan Murray, and Thomson set a course record of 71.
This is an 18-hole sand green course, with sand scrapes in place of grass putting surfaces, and its sandy base allows play all year. The men's course measures 5457 metres to par 70 and the women's 4965 metres to par 71, with a slope rating of 109. Generous fairways lead to well-protected scrapes, and several doglegs, well-placed trees and thick bush off the fairway call for careful course management. The club has upgraded the fairways and surrounds in recent years. Kangaroos, wallabies and emus are common, along with old grass trees and resident gang-gang cockatoos, and wildflowers come out in spring.
Visitors are welcome except during certain club tournaments and championships, and can join competitions. Bookings are generally not needed: when the clubhouse is unattended, green fees go in an honesty box. Fees are $20 for 18 holes and $10 for nine, and juniors under 18 pay $10 for 18 holes. Clubs and buggies can be hired for $10 by prior arrangement, and EFTPOS is available. Women play their competition on Tuesdays and men on Saturdays.
The club is run by volunteers. The clubhouse bar is available by prior arrangement, and groups can be catered for if booked ahead.
