About the course
Heathcote Golf Club is about 140 kilometres north of Melbourne in the Heathcote wine region. Golf in the town dates to the goldrush era, when a nine-hole course was played at Bald Hill, but mining and housing squeezed that site and in 1928 the club moved to the racecourse reserve. Harold Cates, then the professional at Bendigo Golf Club, designed the new course, which opened on 15 July 1928, with the grandstand serving as the first clubhouse. The golfers took over care of the reserve when the racing club closed in 1969, automated irrigation arrived in 1983, and grass greens were officially opened on 14 October 1990.
The 18-hole, par 72 course measures about 5,781 metres. It is fairly flat, with fully irrigated tree-lined fairways and creek, pond or bunker hazards on most holes. Notable holes include:
- 1st: a par 5 that turns sharply left, with a creek crossing in front of the green.
- 7th: stroke index 1 for men, a par 4 running uphill along the northern out-of-bounds fence to a two-tiered green.
- 8th: the shortest par 3 at 130 metres (120 for women), with a bunker front left and a green that falls away at the back.
- 13th: the club's signature hole, a mid-iron par 3 over water to a two-tiered green.
- 18th: a par 3 finish to a green shared with the 11th.
Visitors are welcome for social and competition golf. Social golf is $40 for all-day play, with twilight rates in summer, paid through the Vendi terminal on course or via GolfNow, which also takes bookings. Competitions are played on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, usually teeing off between 11.45am and 12.30pm, and visitors pay $30 to enter. The club has four electric carts for hire through Vendi Golf.
Facilities include practice nets, a practice bunker and green, and a clubhouse seating 120 with a licensed bar and an undercover area overlooking the 18th green. Meals are served on Friday nights, bookings essential.
