About the course
Axedale Golf Club lies on the banks of the Campaspe River in the township of Axedale, about 15 km east of Bendigo. Golf was recorded in the town in the 1890s, and in 1937 eight founding members formed the club with nine sand-scrape holes on the present site. Floods from the river were a recurring problem and play stopped after 1956. The club re-formed in 1973 and, over two years, converted the course from sand scrapes to bent grass greens to a design by Kevin Hartley, opening it as a full grass-green 18-hole course in 1996. River water is pumped to irrigate the greens and fairways.
The course is short but tight: 5,290 metres and par 69 from the black tees, and 4,840 metres and par 70 from the reds. Native Gully Creek crosses the lower holes five times, there are six par 3s, and all but two greens are bunkered.
- 7th: a 524-metre par 5 that finishes on the bank of the Campaspe.
- 15th: a 410-metre par 4 with a sharp dogleg left and a long downhill approach to a sunken, blind green.
- 17th: a 373-metre par 4 the club rates its hardest, with the creek short of an elevated green.
Visitors must pre-book a tee time online, up to a week ahead, and pay when booking. Green fees are $45 for 18 holes and $30 for nine, under-18s are $10 with an adult and pull buggies $5. Self-hire Vendi carts are booked through vendigolf.com.au, and the club may supply one of its own carts if none are free. Green fee players must carry ID showing their home address and give way to competitors. Visitors with a GA handicap can enter the Sunday stableford for $12, played at any time of day. The course closes on afternoons forecast to reach 38 degrees or more.
The clubhouse is generally unstaffed outside competition days unless arranged beforehand.
