About the course
Maldon Golf Club is on the edge of Maldon, about 130 kilometres north-west of Melbourne, in hilly country beneath Mt Tarrangower. The club was formed in 1908 at the Royal Hotel as the Tarrangower Golf Club, first playing six holes on private land. It moved to its present site in 1913 with nine holes, added three more in the 1930s, and planned an extension to 18 holes in 1938, although most of that work was finished only in the 1950s. The club bought the last of the land in 1959 and has owned the full course since. Maldon was the birthplace of Walter Travis, winner of the 1904 US Amateur, and the club's annual tournament includes a hickory event played for a trophy modelled on his Schenectady putter.
The course is an 18-hole sand greens layout of 4,411 metres, rated par 65. It is well treed and undulating, with views of the surrounding countryside and Mt Tarrangower; the club says some trees on the course are 400 to 580 years old. The sand scrapes hosted the Victorian Sandgreens Championship in 2008 and 2018, and the club regards the 11th as its signature hole.
The course is open to the public all year. Green fees are paid by EFTPOS on site, and carts are hired through the Vendi app. Besides the annual tournament, the club runs an Easter hole-in-one event each year.
The clubhouse seats 80 or more and has a licensed bar, kitchen and outdoor barbecue area, and it is also hired out for functions.
