About the course
Castlemaine Golf Club sits among the rolling bushland of Muckleford in the Victorian Goldfields, about five minutes from Castlemaine, ten from Maldon, thirty from Bendigo and roughly ninety minutes from Melbourne. The club was founded in 1899 with eight holes laid out between old mining workings, played with hickory clubs and rubber-cored balls. It marked its centenary in 1999 with a booklet, *A Century of Golf on the Goldfields*, compiled by Jean Wyldbore, and copies are kept in the clubhouse.
The course is an 18-hole, par 72 layout over gently undulating ground with tree-lined fairways. There are no bunkers, and the walking is easy, but several holes bring water and changes in elevation into play, most notably the closing run of holes the club calls the Devil's Triangle. The greens are grass and are watered all year with recycled water, and kangaroos and birdlife are regular company.
Visitors are welcome all year, although the course is sometimes closed to green fee players for pennant or special events. Green fees are paid on course through the Vendi Golf system by card: $33.50 to play all day, and $10 all day for juniors under 18. Small groups (fewer than about five) do not normally need to book; larger groups and events should book ahead. Carts are booked online through Vendi at $35 for three hours or $45 for five, and push buggies ($7.20) and clubs ($15) can also be hired.
Competitions run on Tuesday (women), Thursday (mixed, 18 holes, cards in by 5pm) and Saturday (mixed, 9 or 18 holes). Visitors with a Golf Australia handicap can enter the Thursday and Saturday events for a $10 competition fee plus half the visitor green fee. The dress code asks for collared shirts, tailored shorts or trousers and soft spikes, with no thongs or singlets. The club has a modern clubhouse, and self-contained RVs can stay on site.
