About the course
Medway Golf Club is on Omar Street in Maidstone, along the Maribyrnong River about 20 minutes from the Melbourne CBD. The land was bought by grazier Thomas Williamson in 1901, and in 1934 his family set out to build a golf course for the western suburbs. Solicitor Stanley Green named it Medway, after Maidstone on the Medway River in Kent, and the Morcom brothers, greenkeepers at Royal Melbourne, built the course. Medway Public Golf Links opened on 31 August 1935, the club formed in 1936, and in 1946 members took over the course, buying the land in 1949. The present clubhouse opened in 1958, replacing a farmhouse from about 1850.
A weir near the 7th tee and a dam in front of the 11th tee were added in 1985, and the fairways were converted to Santa Ana couch around 2000. The opening hole is a 358-metre par 4 with a fairway bunker on the right and an elevated, tiered green.
Visitors can play at set times: all day Monday and Friday, Tuesday after 1pm, Wednesday after 4pm, Thursday after 4pm in summer, and Sunday from about midday. Saturday is for members only. The visitor rate paid on the day is $90 for 18 holes and $55 for nine, and online prepaid rates are lower and vary by season. Reciprocal club members pay half. In daylight saving, unlimited holes after 5pm cost the nine-hole rate. Bookings are essential, payment is by eftpos only, and carts cost non-members $55 for 18 holes. Neat golf attire is required.
The club has a coaching academy and the Maribyrnong River Function Centre. The bistro serves lunch from Tuesday to Saturday, and the bar and outdoor deck open from 10.30am Tuesday to Sunday.
