About the course
Altona Lakes Golf Course is a public nine-hole course in Paisley Park, off Mason Street in Altona North in Melbourne's west. It is home to the Altona Lakes Golf Club, formed in 1994 by a group of Saturday morning social golfers who wanted affordable competition golf. The club plays in Victorian Golf League events and fields Scratch, Handicap and Senior Pennant teams, and has new clubrooms that it helped to fund.
As the name suggests, water shapes most of the layout. Each hole is played twice in an 18-hole round, from different tees on the second nine:
- 1st and 10th: a par 5 with about 210 metres of water down the left and out of bounds on the right. From the 10th tee the drive must carry the lake, and the approach is to a thin, raised green.
- 2nd and 11th: a par 4 with three separate water hazards and a green that slopes sharply from back to front.
- 4th and 13th: a par 5 with a lake down the right and a creek crossing the fairway about 60 metres short of the green.
- 5th and 14th: a par 4 whose green is close to 35 metres long, with water behind it.
The course is open to the public seven days, from 6:30am to 8pm on weekdays in summer (October to March) and 7am to 7pm in winter. Green fees are $37.50 for 18 holes and $27.50 for nine, with senior, pensioner and junior rates on weekdays only. Nine-hole rounds can be booked online after creating an account; 18-hole bookings are taken by phone through the pro shop. Club competitions run on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays.
Practice facilities include a 16-bay undercover, floodlit driving range, a large putting green and a chipping green. The pro shop sells equipment and does club repairs and regripping, and PGA coaches offer private lessons from $70 for 30 minutes as well as small "Back to Basics" group clinics.
