About the course
Northern Golf Club is a private members' club in Glenroy, about 12 kilometres north of the Melbourne CBD. Its forerunner, Essendon Golf Club, was formed in 1896, and Northern Golf Club was created in 1912 when Essendon members joined with golfers from Moreland and Royal Park to buy the Glenroy site, where the club has played since.
The 18-hole championship course covers 55 hectares, with more than 55 bunkers, 10 water hazards and fairways lined by river red gums that are around a century old. The club credits the layout to its professional Sam Bennet and member Jack English. The men's course measures 6,000 metres and the women's 5,150 metres. In 2016 the club adopted a 22-year master plan, and the design firm Thomson Perrett is redeveloping the holes under it. Play around the greens calls for a range of short shots and careful reading of subtle breaks.
The club describes itself as members only. Non-members can play at select times: as of 1 March 2026 the green fee was $120 for 18 holes and $80 for nine, with a golf cart $50 for 18 holes and $30 for nine, and club hire on application. Waitlisted membership applicants may also be offered casual rounds, and members can bring guests under the club's guest policy. Enquiries and bookings go through the pro shop on (03) 9306 1677 (option 1), and a dress code applies.
Practice facilities include a full driving range and short game areas, and the Golf Teaching Centre has five PGA coaches offering lessons, club fitting and ball-tracking technology. There is a retail pro shop, and the clubhouse has a bar and bistro with a head chef, a members' lounge and function rooms.
