About the course
Westgate Golf Club is a nine-hole course at 1 Creek Street in Spotswood, about 8 km from the Melbourne CBD. Stoney Creek runs through the middle of the layout, and the railway line runs along the 8th, where it is out of bounds.
The course has tight fairways and elevated greens, many of them protected by bunkers, and the greens run at medium to fast pace. The nine holes range from 87 to 350 metres, and two of them, the 4th and 6th, share a green.
- 2nd: a 310-metre par 4 with Stoney Creek crossing about 220 metres from the blue tee, then an uphill approach.
- 4th: a 350-metre par 4 and one of the hardest on the course, with the creek crossing about 230 metres out and a narrow, sloping green.
- 5th: the signature hole, a 168-metre dogleg par 3 with out of bounds right and the smallest green on the course, which cannot be seen from the tee.
- 9th: a short par 3 to a large green behind a big front bunker; it is currently played from a temporary tee (about 85 metres) because of the West Gate Tunnel works.
The course is open to the public, with tee times booked online, and green fees are $35 for 18 holes and $25 for nine on weekdays. The pro shop opens from 7am every day except Christmas Day, with closing time depending on conditions, and stocks equipment and apparel. Lessons with Golf Australia accredited instructor Tim McRae run every Monday, at $80 for an individual lesson or $50 a person for two, booked by phone. The club also offers seven-day memberships.
