About the course
Moe Golf Club plays on Thompsons Road at Newborough, beside Lake Narracan in the Latrobe Valley. The club was formed on 3 May 1934 and began on a three-hole course known as Savige's Paddock, then moved to a nine-hole layout with sand-scrape greens inside the Moe Racecourse, where grass greens replaced the sand in the early 1950s. In 1962 talks began with the State Electricity Commission to buy the present 111-acre site, which cost $21,000. Volunteers did most of the work on the new course: the lower nine opened for play in 1965, the upper nine in 1966, and the official opening came in 1967.
The 18-hole course measures 5989 metres at par 72 for men and 5306 metres at par 73 for women. The front nine is gently undulating and calls for accurate approaches, while the longer back nine opens out with views of Lake Narracan and the Baw Baw ranges. Native gums line the fairways, which were converted to Legend couch in the 2000s, and the greens are bent grass. There are 12 bunkers, and creeks cross the course.
- 1st: a 350-metre par 4 from an elevated tee, carrying a creek bed and gully to a fairway that bends slightly left.
- 4th: the signature hole, a 182-metre par 3 over water to a green bunkered left and right, rebuilt with new tees and bunkers around 2000.
- 18th: a 329-metre par 4 to a green that slopes from back to front and right to left.
Green fee players and groups are welcome, and no tee bookings are needed. A $20 green fee covers unlimited golf for the day, and carts cost $40 (booking preferred) through the bar on 03 5127 2731. Dress is neat casual. The course is open during daylight hours, and the licensed clubhouse opens Thursday, Saturday and Sunday, plus Wednesday afternoons in daylight saving. Practice facilities include a range, putting green and nets, and the clubhouse has a dining room, members' bar and terrace.
