About the course
Traralgon Golf Club sits on the Princes Highway at the entrance to Traralgon, 165 km east of Melbourne and close to the town's shops, motels and restaurants. The club was formed in October 1904 by the Traralgon Young People's Society and, by its own history, opened the first 18-hole course in Gippsland in 1923 on land around the railway reservoir. In 1939 members bought their own ground from Traralgon South farmer Jim Holden, and the course laid out there by Vern Morcom opened in 1940. It still follows much of his layout, and drainage works in 1989 ended frequent wet-weather closures.
The course is a par 72 of about 5,800 metres, with bent grass greens and Santa Ana couch fairways. The fairways are narrow, so accurate driving matters, and water comes into play early.
- 2nd: a 453-metre par 5 from the blue tees, driving over the lake to a narrow two-tiered green.
- 7th: a 522-metre par 5 whose green the club rates the hardest on the course to putt.
- 8th: a 163-metre par 3 over water to a large green.
Visitors are welcome seven days for nine or 18 holes: all day Monday, Friday and Sunday, after 1pm Tuesday to Thursday and after 3pm on Saturday, subject to events. Green fees are $40 for 18 holes and $25 for nine, and carts are $50 and $30. Visitors with a Golflink number can join competitions; mixed competitions are held on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday and women's competitions on Wednesday. Bookings are made through the pro shop on (03) 5174 2460.
The pro shop opens seven days and offers lessons, club fitting and repairs, cart and equipment hire, and junior clinics. The licensed clubhouse sits on the edge of the 18th fairway with a balcony looking across to the 1st and 9th, and serves Friday night meals.
