About the course
Morwell Golf Club is on Fairway Drive on the north-eastern edge of Morwell, about 140 kilometres east of Melbourne, or around an hour and 45 minutes by the Princes Freeway. The club was founded in 1908. Its clubhouse, opened in March 1977, was built from the two halves of a house moved out of the Yallourn township, which made way for the expansion of the Yallourn mine.
The 18-hole course is par 72, listed at 6079 metres for men and 5283 metres for women, with undulating, tree-lined fairways and grass greens. The prevailing wind is a westerly.
- 6th: a 447-metre par 5 with water down the right; women must carry a hazard directly in front of their tee.
- 12th: the longest par 5 at 480 metres, straight but with water to the left of the green.
- 16th: a 356-metre par 4 played uphill, usually into the prevailing westerly.
- 18th: a 461-metre par 5 that climbs to the green, with a side slope that pushes the ball right.
All visitors are welcome. The green fee is $25 for nine or 18 holes, or as many as you like, paid into the honesty box or by bank transfer, with the receipt book filled in either way. Carts for non-members cost $25 for nine holes and $40 for 18, from a fleet of five. Members of affiliated clubs pay only the competition fee in the Monday and Sunday open competitions, and a Thursday nine-hole chicken run is open to everyone. Trade and social groups can book a block of tee times at discounted rates. Dress is neat golf attire, with no singlets, thongs or footy shorts.
The course is open from 7.30am to 6pm (8pm in daylight saving). Practice facilities include a putting green, nets and a 200-metre practice fairway. The air-conditioned clubhouse seats 80 and has a bar open daily, a deck, two verandahs and a barbecue gazebo.
