About the course
Phillip Island Golf Club is on Settlement Road in Cowes, within walking distance of the town centre and a short way from the beach. Golf on the island goes back to 1910, when a course was laid out at the racecourse, and several short-lived courses followed, including a nine-hole links at Summerland designed by Alex Russell that opened in 1930 and fell out of use after the Second World War. The present club dates from 1947, when Cowes golfers led by guest house owner Arthur Jones formed a company to buy land near the town and build a new course.
The 18-hole course is par 72 and measures 6003 metres, with well-kept greens and plenty of wildlife.
Visitors can play most of the time, though access is limited on competition days and during club events, tournaments and corporate days. Bookings are essential and can be made online up to 28 days ahead; golfers with a GolfLink number can enter competitions, with those bookings opening 24 hours before. Midweek green fees are $60 for 18 holes and $40 for nine, rising to $75 and $50 on weekends, public holidays and in the peak period from 21 December to 31 January. Juniors pay $35 and $25 at all times. Motorised carts cost $50 for 18 holes and $30 for nine, club hire is $25 and pull buggies $5.
The golf shop stocks clothing and equipment, keeps right- and left-handed hire sets, and offers regripping, reshafting and loft and lie adjustments, plus limited bag and buggy storage. The clubhouse cafe serves breakfast and lunch, opening 10am to 3pm Tuesday to Thursday and 7am to 3pm on weekends, with indoor tables and an outdoor terrace overlooking the course.
Green fees
Weekend/public holiday and peak (21 Dec to 31 Jan) $75/$50; cart $50 (18); bookings essential. Junior $35 (18 holes), $25 (9 holes), including weekends and peak period.
