About the course

Flinders Golf Club plays along the cliff tops at Flinders, on the southern tip of the Mornington Peninsula, with views over Western Port to Phillip Island and Bass Strait. David Myles Maxwell formed the club in 1902, building on a rough four-hole clifftop layout, and within a year it had 18 holes. The Easter Tournament has run almost every year since 1905. Dr Alister MacKenzie visited in 1926 and recommended turning the Coffin into a two-shot hole, now the club's best-known hole. Since 2022 a Michael Henderson master plan has been carried out one hole a year, along with the rebuilding of the old push-up greens.

The 18 holes total par 69 and about 5,300 metres from the black tees, and the wind off Bass Strait is a constant factor.

  • 1st, Maxwell's: a 234-metre par 4 from an elevated tee, tempting for long hitters.
  • 4th, the Coffin: a 272-metre par 4 with two hazards, one about 150 metres out and one short of the green; on Navy training days, gunfire adds a distraction.
  • 9th, Tea House: a 174-metre par 3 at the highest point of the course to a narrow green bunkered on both sides.
  • 15th: a 495-metre par 5, the longest hole.

Visitors and social groups are welcome, and tee times are booked online. Current online rates are $90 for 18 holes midweek and $110 at weekends, with 13 holes for $70 midweek.

The golf shop sells equipment and apparel and offers club fitting seven days a week, and teaching professional Josh Shaw gives private and group lessons and a 12-week Pathways program for new golfers. The clubhouse restaurant, open to visitors, serves lunch seven days and dinner on Friday from 5pm.
