About the course

Portarlington Golf Club is on Hood Road in Portarlington on the Bellarine Peninsula. Golf in the town goes back to 1899, when a bank manager and friends played a six-hole course along The Esplanade, one hole of which flooded at high tide. A club was formed in 1909, but it folded and re-formed more than once before settling on its present site in 1937, and it published a centenary history in 2009.

The club describes the course as neither a links nor a parkland layout: it is close to the beach, has mature trees, drains quickly and is an easy walk over gentle undulations. The greens are bent grass, and five sets of tees let players choose their length, from 5947 metres off the men's black tees down to 3425 metres off the orange. The round opens with a short par 4 that longer hitters may try to drive, with bunkers either side of a deep green.

Visitors are welcome and can book online. Weekday green fees are $70 for 18 holes and $45 for nine, with $80 for 18 at weekends and public holidays, golf after 4pm $40, and juniors $30 or $20. Carts are $50 and hire clubs $25. Green fee times are Monday, Friday and Sunday all day, Tuesday after 1:15pm, Wednesday after 12:30pm, Thursday after 1:40pm and Saturday after 3:30pm.

The pro shop is run by head PGA professional Matt Milne and his team, offering lessons on the range, on course or on the indoor simulator, plus club fitting. The simulator costs $30 an hour for one player or $60 for two to four. The clubhouse has a bistro with modern and traditional dishes, a bar with boutique beers, cocktails and Bellarine wines, and function rooms including the View Room.
