About the course
Queenscliff Golf Club plays across Swan Island, an island of drifted sand on Australian Defence Force land beside Queenscliff, surrounded by the Ramsar-listed wetlands of Swan Bay. Golf began here in 1907, when a championship player, Mr Banks, chose the site and had five holes ready for play by Christmas Day; the club itself was formally established in October 1913. A house brought across from Queenscliff became the clubhouse in 1920, the course grew to 12 holes in 1922 and 15 in 1954, and members laid out the full 18 holes in 1961. The two nines were swapped in 1989.
The sandy base means the course drains freely and stays playable in wet weather. It plays to par 72, the prevailing wind is south-westerly, and in recent years 14 fairways have been converted to Santa Ana couch and bunkers rebuilt as steep grass-faced pot bunkers. Swan Bay's birdlife includes the orange-bellied parrot, royal spoonbills and pelicans.
- 6th: a 387-metre par 4 with views over Queenscliff, Swan Bay and Port Phillip Bay.
- 11th: a 494-metre par 5, the first of two par 5s in a row, whose tee can become an island on king tides.
- 14th: a 176-metre par 3, usually played straight into the breeze.
Until the end of November 2026 the 1st plays as a temporary par 3 while the area near its green is rebuilt.
