About the course

Portsea Golf Club sits on rolling sand dunes between Port Phillip Bay and Point Nepean National Park, about 90 minutes from Melbourne. Melbourne businessman Arthur Relph found the land in 1923 and commissioned Jock Young to lay out nine holes, and the club was formed on 1 January 1926. Alex Russell remodelled it in 1930, and it grew to 18 holes in 1965 under a redesign by Sloan Morpeth. A master plan prepared with Mike Clayton in 1998 laid the basis of today's course, a new clubhouse and routing followed in 2013, and the club reaches its centenary in 2026.

The par 71 links winds through dunes and moonah, measuring 5,747 metres from the blue tees and 5,078 metres from the red. Ogilvy, Cocking and Mead have recently widened fairways, reworked bunkers and reshaped greens. Wind is a constant factor, and London Bridge Road is out of bounds on the 11th and 17th.

  • 3rd: a 436-metre uphill par 5 with views of the bay and the city on a clear day, bunkers right and the national park left.
  • 7th: a 169-metre par 3, often into the wind, needing a full carry to a green bunkered left, right and long.
  • 10th: a 256-metre par 4 to an exposed green that can yield an eagle or a big number.
  • 18th: a 399-metre par 4 with blind tee and second shots, finishing beside the clubhouse.

Portsea is a members' club that takes visitors on Mondays and on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons, with limited access on Fridays and Sundays (Sunday players need a valid Golf ID). Visitor access is limited from mid-December to early February. Tee times are booked online after registering. The pro shop is on (03) 5981 6155.

The club also runs 24 refurbished rooms above the fairways at Mercure Portsea, and the clubhouse looks out over the course and the bay.
