About the course
Sorrento Golf Club on Langford Road is a private members' club about 90 minutes from Melbourne. It was formed in 1907, when six enthusiasts met at the Continental Hotel to start what was first called the Sorrento and Portsea Golf Club, and took its present name in 1909. The original nine holes, designed by the club's first professional W.L. Spicer, opened in 1908, and the clubhouse on Langford Road opened in January 1912. Englishman J.D.A. Scott designed an 18-hole layout that was completed in 1929, and several holes were added or altered in 1965. From 1972 Peter Thomson and Mike Wolveridge reworked most of the course. The club celebrated its centenary in 2007 and reopened its renovated clubhouse in 2013.
The par 70 course runs over undulating sandy ground through coastal dunes and bushland, measuring 5,629 metres from the blue tees and 5,151 metres from the red, with four sets of tees. It has bentgrass greens, sharp doglegs and forced carries, and the five par 3s, often played in the wind, are a feature.
- 2nd: a 135-metre par 3 to a green narrow at the front, with deep bunkers right and a hollow left.
- 9th: a 516-metre par 5 with a large, deep bunker on the right.
- 13th: a 155-metre par 3 that the club rates among its hardest holes, where club selection in the wind is critical.
- 18th: a 334-metre par 4 with a steeply uphill second to the green below the clubhouse.
Limited tee times are available to visitors and members' guests. Visitor days are currently Mondays, Tuesday afternoons and Thursdays, subject to availability, and the course is closed to visitors from Boxing Day to the end of January. Contact the pro shop on (03) 5984 2626 to arrange a round.
The clubhouse overlooks the 18th green.
