About the course

Rochester Golf Club was formed in 1910 and first played on a six-hole course in a paddock behind the town's hospital, which grew to nine and then 18 holes after the First World War. From 1933 the club played on the Rochester Jockey Club's racecourse land on the northern edge of town, but that layout often flooded in wet years. In 1974 the club bought about 150 acres of sandy country on Black Culvert Road, around 7 km south-west of Rochester, chosen because its sandy loam drains well. Course architect Dick Pendlebury drew up the plans in 1983, members laid the irrigation pipes over the summer of 1983 and 1984, and play moved to the new course in 1984. From 1986 contractors spent more than ten summers shaping the mounds, raised tees and scrapes that turned a flat paddock into an undulating course.

The 18-hole course has irrigated fairways and sand scrape greens, with four sets of tees. For men it is par 71, at 5970 metres from the blue tees and 5103 metres from the white; for women it is par 72, at 5211 metres from the red tees and 4721 metres from the yellow.

Golf is played all year, with the winter season running from March to October. Visitors are welcome and tee times can be booked online. The green fee is $20 for a full day or $10 for nine holes, and competition entry is $10 for 18 holes and $5 for nine. Non-members can hire a motorised cart for $50 a round by phoning the club ahead.

The clubhouse has a function room for hire with a large kitchen, a bar, a dance floor and a PA system.
