About the course

Snake Valley Golf Club is on Chepstowe-Snake Valley Road at Chepstowe, near Snake Valley, west of Ballarat. It is a volunteer-maintained country club, and its recent history is a story of turning a nine-hole course with artificial greens into one with real grass. During drought in the early 2000s the club dug dams beside the 6th fairway, later joined into an eight-megalitre dam. When the township was sewered, the club offered Crown land for the treatment plant in exchange for recycled water, signing an agreement with Central Highlands Water in 2011. Members built raised greens from 110 truckloads of soil, with advice from Kel Oswin of Forest Resort golf club in Creswick, and the new greens were opened in December 2014. A state grant later extended irrigation along the fairways.

The course is nine holes with watered grass greens on flat ground with tree-lined fairways. There are 19 irrigated tees, so an 18-hole round plays the nine holes twice from different tees. The treatment ponds and a 30-megalitre recycled water dam sit on land that once held three more holes.

The course is open all year and visitors are welcome. Green fees are $20 for 18 holes and $12 for juniors. Two carts can be hired through the Vendi cart system. Contact the club on 0492 183 318 or info@snakevalleygc.com.au.
