About the course

Ballarat Golf Club was founded on 11 April 1895 and describes itself as Australia's oldest continually played course. Its first nine holes, on Crown land on the Ballarat common, were laid out by captain Andrew Nicoll in imitation of St Andrews, and the course became an 18-hole layout in 1909, with Alex Russell drawing up a five-year improvement plan from 1929. In 2009 the club moved to a largely new championship course built from scratch to a Peter Thomson and Ross Perrett design. The clubhouse is on Sturt Street about 600 metres west of the Arch of Victory, a few minutes from the CBD, and bus route 10 stops opposite.

The course is a par 72 of 6,283 metres from the black tees, 5,816 metres from the orange and 5,238 metres from the green, with a slope rating of 132 from the back for men. There is also a par 3 tee set of 1,982 metres (par 54). The course was ranked 65th in Golf Australia's Top 100 Public Access Courses for 2025 and hosted the 2026 Australian Junior Amateur.

Visitors are welcome: green fee times are all day Monday, Friday and Sunday, after 1pm Tuesday and Thursday, after 1:30pm Wednesday and after 3:30pm Saturday. Book online or with the pro shop on (03) 5338 3010. The club's published green fee list dates from July 2025, so check current rates. There are 20 carts (bookings required, two per group at most) and a few hire sets. Visitors cannot use private carts, the course and clubhouse are strictly no-BYO, and a collared or high-neck shirt is required for competition golf.

Facilities include a driving range, practice facilities and a pro shop. The bistro serves lunch and dinner seven days, with floor-to-ceiling views of the course.
