About the course

Midlands Golf Club is part of the Midlands Ballarat RSL venue on Heinz Lane, Invermay Park, north of Ballarat. It was founded on 7 April 1919 as the Ballarat North Golf Club with nine sand-scrape holes, extended to 18 the following year, and took the Midlands name in 1936. When Selkirk's resumed the land under holes 8 to 15 for its clay pit in 1970, members chose to start again on their own site. The firm of Harris, Thomson and Wolveridge, with Peter Thomson as a partner, was engaged as architect; Thomson helped open the first completed holes in December 1973, and the new course and clubhouse were opened by the Governor of Victoria on 12 December 1976. The club also credits Bob Shearer alongside Thomson for the design. The Ballarat RSL sub-branch moved in during 2017.

The 18-hole course is par 72 for men and 73 for women. The ground is gentle and easy to walk, with wide tree-lined fairways, doglegs both ways, elevated greens, strategic bunkering and water on seven holes. A 63-megalitre dam beside the 9th, dug in 1990, gives the course a permanent water supply.

The course is open seven days. Weekday green fees are $40 for 18 holes, $35 for 12 and $30 for nine, with twilight unlimited play after 4pm for $25; weekends and public holidays are $45 for 18. Non-member carts are $50 for 18 holes, and clubs with a buggy can be hired from $10. Tee times can be booked online or through the pro shop on 03 5332 6965.

Practice facilities include a driving range on the 13th tee (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday afternoons), a putting green, a chipping area and a 150-metre chipping range open daily. The pro shop has PGA-qualified staff for lessons and club fitting, plus a golf simulator. The club has a bistro, sports bar and function rooms, with food trucks covering meals during current renovations.
