About the course

Mt Xavier Golf and Bowls Club is at 118 Fortune Street, Ballarat East, just off the main highway on the Melbourne side of Ballarat. The club has been on its current site for more than 70 years and combines an 18-hole golf course with an eight-rink grass bowling green. Its website, last updated in 2023, notes that the owners of part of the land had said they would not renew the lease beyond May 2024, and that the club planned to move the clubhouse, bowling green and some holes onto adjoining Crown land.

The course has grass greens and is par 70, about 5,340 metres from the men's tees, with a mix of holes through thick pine trees and others over open, undulating country. A bore and new couch tees allow play all year, though fairways can dry out in summer. Key holes include:

1st: a 232-metre par 4 that can be driven, bending left to right.
4th: a 438-metre par 5, rated the hardest par 5, climbing right through a narrow opening to a steeply sloping green.
14th: a 118-metre par 3 known as the donkey drop, played steeply downhill.
17th: a 362-metre par 4 that needs two good shots to reach a small green.

Casual golfers are welcome on most days without notice, and the course opens to the public on Saturdays from 1.30pm. Motorised carts are available for hire. Fees on the club site have not been updated since 2023, so check with the club on 03 5331 3691 before visiting. Members have use of a driving range. The clubhouse has a bar and function facilities.
