About the course
The Eastern Golf Club is a private members' club at 215 Victoria Road, Yering, in the Yarra Valley, and traces its origins to 1896. The course lies within a 120-acre private nature reserve centred on Yering Gorge, where the Yarra River runs for about 3 km, with views to the Christmas Hills and the Dividing Range. Kangaroos, wombats, platypus and a nesting pair of wedge-tailed eagles live on the property.
Greg Norman Golf Course Design laid out 27 holes, played as three par-72 courses: the South (holes 1 to 18, 6,559 metres from the black tees), the North (holes 10 to 27, 6,502 metres) and the East (holes 19 to 27 then 1 to 9, 6,359 metres). The design leans on strategy rather than penalty, with wide landing areas and several sets of tees. Shark Waters is a separate nine-hole par-3 course of 1,189 metres among wetlands, and Eastern Waters, introduced in late 2019, combines holes 19 to 27 with Shark Waters as an 18-hole par-63 round. Lengths below are from the blue tees.
- 3rd: a 418-metre par 4 with a downhill drive and a carry of about 200 metres over water.
- 14th: a 537-metre par 5 with water on both sides of the landing area and a raised green.
- 18th: a 414-metre par 4 played from a high tee to an elevated green.
Play is limited to members' guests, guests of the club's Yering Gorge Cottages, members of reciprocal clubs with a letter of introduction from their home club, and members of other golf clubs who enquire, subject to availability. The published 18-hole fee is $90 for a member's guest, $150 unintroduced and $120 for cottage guests, with nine holes at $50, $85 and $60. Golfers not playing with a member should arrive 20 minutes early for a course briefing.
The practice fairway, covered bays and performance centre are for playing members. The clubhouse has a lounge and bar open 9.30am to 5.30pm daily, a dining room, and a pro shop with PGA coaching.
