About the course
Heritage Golf and Country Club is at Chirnside Park in the Yarra Valley, less than an hour's drive north-east of Melbourne, on land on both sides of the Yarra River. It is a private members' club with two 18-hole courses of contrasting styles.
St John, designed by Jack Nicklaus, opened on 30 November 2000 and was the first private Nicklaus Signature course built in Australia. It is a par 72 American-style parkland course of 6670 metres, with wide fairways, subtle greens and carefully placed bunkers, and from the gold tees it has a scratch rating of 74 and a slope of 139. A flood mitigation system with a sensor-controlled floodgate means it can usually be played within 36 hours of heavy rain. Across a bridge on the northern side of the river, The Henley was designed by Tony Cashmore in consultation with Nicklaus Design. It is a traditional links-style course, nine holes out and nine in, through wetlands, billabongs and rugged rough beside the Warrandyte State Forest, and the club says it includes the longest par 4 in Australia.
As a private club, Heritage is not open to the public. Interstate and overseas golfers can play, visitors are welcome when accompanied by a member, and the club also takes social and corporate groups. Visitor bookings for up to ten players must be made through the online request form at least 72 hours ahead, with a 50% deposit, and a strict dress code applies.
The driving range is open from 7.30am until sunset, and two putting greens sit near the first tees. The pro shop, open 6.30am to 6pm daily, handles bookings, range balls, electric cart keys and lessons with the club's PGA professionals. The clubhouse has the Nicklaus Bar, a members' lounge and a wide verandah.
