About the course
The Sands Torquay is a resort course on Sands Boulevard in Torquay, at the start of the Great Ocean Road and a short walk from Whites Beach. Its 18-hole links-style layout was designed by Stuart Appleby, a nine-time PGA Tour winner, and is set into coastal sand dunes among wetlands, native bushland and stands of Moonah trees. Kangaroos and birdlife are often seen on the course.
Bunkers are the main defence on the front nine, and the wind shapes much of the back: - 2nd: the shortest par 4, with several options from the tee to a small, tightly bunkered green. - 7th: a 170-metre par 3 with deceptive bunkering and a crosswind that pushes lofted shots right. - 13th: the shortest hole, played sharply uphill to a mostly blind green on a ridge. - 16th: the last par 5, played from an elevated tee across a wetland into the prevailing wind, with a narrow gap about 50 metres short of the green. - 18th: a par 4 bending left around a large fairway bunker, usually into the wind.
Tee times are open to the public as well as resort guests, and can be booked online or through reception. Golf is open from 7am to 5pm. Visitors are asked to wear golf attire: collared shirts or polos, tailored trousers, shorts or skirts, closed shoes, and no denim. The resort's stay and play package includes 18 holes for two with a shared cart, range balls, and use of the putting green and short-game areas. Green fees are not listed on the resort's website, so check rates when booking.
Coaching is run with the Geelong Golf Academy, covering private lessons, club fitting, adult and women's clinics and junior programs. Sabbia, the resort's Italian restaurant, serves breakfast, lunch and dinner seven days, looks over the course and is open to the public.
Green fees
