About the course

Kooringal Golf Club is on Wilga Avenue in Altona, in Melbourne's west. The club was formed at a public meeting at Williamstown Town Hall on 27 September 1946 as the Williamstown Golf Club. With wartime shortages leaving no machinery, the first members built the opening nine holes with picks, shovels and hand mowers, and all 18 holes were in play by 1952. The club became Kooringal in 1958, when Altona became its own municipality; the name is an Aboriginal word meaning "by the water".

The first clubhouse was a former canteen bought from the Williamstown naval dockyards and moved to the course in 1947. It was replaced by the present clubhouse, completed in October 1996. Craig Parry Golf Design made changes to the course in the early 2000s, mainly for safety, and in 2022, the club's 75th year, Crafter Mogford Course Architects were appointed to prepare a course enhancement plan.

Kooringal is a private club for members and their guests. Golfers affiliated with another club can play on selected days and times for a green fee of $130, and bookings are essential, so call the golf shop first. Two-seater carts and push buggies are available for hire. The dress code calls for collared golf shirts and tailored shorts, pants or skirts, with no denim, cargo shorts or tracksuits.

Practice facilities include a 100-metre pitching area, a large putting green, four nets and two Trackman simulators. The golf shop offers tuition and club fitting. The clubhouse has a members' lounge, an outdoor terrace overlooking the course and a restaurant serving lunch and dinner from Tuesday to Sunday.
