About the course
Augusta Golf Club sits high on the Leeuwin Ridge at the end of Hillview Road, 7.6 km from the turn-off on Blackwood Avenue in Augusta, looking over the Indian Ocean and the Blackwood River valley. The site was first earmarked for golf in the 1920s by Augusta Hotel owner Harry Stanes, a friend of former British Amateur champion P.C. Anderson. The club was formally founded on 11 June 1957, with designers Murray and Eileen Dawson and Maxine Bishop among the contractors engaged, and the first nine holes opened on 17 May 1958. The course has since grown to 18 holes, and the club is home to the annual Augusta Masters.
The par 72 course measures 5,837 metres for men and 5,034 metres for women and runs through peppermint and grass tree forest, with the natural swales and hillocks left largely as they were. Ten holes have significant doglegs and the wind is a constant factor, with four or five holes into a stiff breeze on most days. Fairways are kikuyu, often narrow, and the greens are small sand greens with some strong breaks. Volunteers maintain the course. Holes to note:
- 9th: a 484-metre par 5, uphill all the way and usually into a south-easterly in summer.
- 11th: a 199-metre par 3 from an elevated tee to a small, raised green.
- 13th: a 475-metre par 5 that doglegs left, with ocean views from the tee.
Visitors are welcome and bookings are generally not needed. Green fees are $30 for 18 holes and $20 for nine, paid at the clubhouse when it is attended, into the honour box at the first tee, or at Augusta Xtreme Sports on Blackwood Avenue. Motorised carts cost $40 and must be arranged by phone. The club has no hire clubs or buggies, but Augusta Xtreme Sports hires a set with buggy for $25. Scorecards are at the first tee, and mobile reception is too patchy for scoring apps.
The clubhouse looks over the forest towards the Blackwood River, but it and the bar open only around competitions unless a visiting group arranges otherwise with the bar manager.
