About the course
Margaret River Golf Club is on Wallcliffe Road, about 7 km from the town centre, on 65 hectares of natural bushland near the mouth of the Margaret River. Golf in the district dates back to 1928, with courses on local farms before and after the Second World War. The present club was re-formed at a meeting in 1952 and chose a reserve beside the cemetery that included a lake, along with 31 acres of adjoining land. Dr N. Robertson designed the course from an aerial photograph, local farmers helped clear the fairways with their machinery, and it was officially opened on 12 June 1955.
The fairways were reticulated from 1970 and are now kikuyu. The greens were converted from sand to grass between 1992 and 1994, when bunkers were added and the water hazards on the 1st, 7th and 8th were enlarged, and access to grey water from 2010 allowed a major irrigation upgrade. The course measures 6,092 metres and is par 72 (par 73 for women), running up and down the slopes of the coastal ridge. Men's ratings range from 68 off the red tees to 73 off the blue, and the course records are 66 for men and 67 for women.
This is a private members' club that welcomes visitors, but bookings are essential and can be made online. Green fees are $75 for 18 holes and $50 for nine, with juniors under 18 at $25 and $15. Carts cost $45 for 18 holes and $30 for nine, and club hire starts at $25. Golf shoes must have non-metal spikes and attire should be neat and tidy, with smart casual dress in the clubhouse.
Practice facilities include a 180-metre irons-only range, a large chipping green with a bunker and two putting greens. The golf shop is staffed by PGA professionals who offer lessons from $70 for 30 minutes, group clinics, club fitting and repairs.
