About the course

Capel Golf Club is at Stratham, on the Bussell Highway in the Geographe wine region, about 10 minutes' drive south of Bunbury. The club was formed on 13 April 1928, playing first on a temporary course and then at the old Capel racecourse, which was often waterlogged in winter. In the late 1950s it bought land at Stratham from the Dunkley brothers. Murray Dawson designed the front nine, which opened on 19 September 1964, and the course grew to 18 holes in 1966. Within five years of the move members had sunk a bore, put in reticulation and replaced the sand greens with grass. The Capel Open, first held in 1973, lists Terry Gale, Graham Marsh, Stephen Leaney and Greg Chalmers among its winners.

The 18-hole course runs through native bushland, with tree-lined fairways, bent grass greens and well-placed bunkers. Kangaroos and birdlife are common.

Capel is a members' club that welcomes green fee players and groups for social golf seven days a week outside competition times. Visitors pay $60 for 18 holes when booking online ($65 in store or by phone) and $35 for nine. Golfers with a Golf Australia handicap can enter competitions by booking online or calling the golf shop on (08) 9795 7033. The main 18-hole competitions run on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, with ladies on Wednesday mornings and a mixed field on Sunday afternoons. The club has 22 carts at $50 for 18 holes and $30 for nine, and hires clubs ($25) and pull buggies ($10). The course is licensed and BYO drinks are not permitted. Collared shirts are required on the course.

Practice facilities include a floodlit, undercover 10-bay driving range (buckets $7 and $14), two putting greens and a chipping green with a practice bunker. The golf shop stocks equipment and apparel, but there is no PGA professional on staff. The clubhouse bar opens most days, from midday on Tuesdays and 10am on Saturdays, and is closed on Mondays.
