About the course
Chequers Golf Club is on Sounness Drive in Bullsbrook, on Perth's northern fringe, reached from Tonkin Highway via the Neaves Road exit and about 18 minutes' drive from Ellenbrook. The course runs through natural bushland of gums, banksias and grass trees, with plenty of wildlife.
The 18 holes play to par 71 and 6043 metres from the blue tees and 5617 metres from the whites, and to par 72 and 5325 metres from the reds. Narrow fairways, a mix of long, short and dogleg holes, and small, slightly raised saltine greens put the emphasis on accuracy and the short game. The club notes that Arccos data has ranked it the hardest course in Western Australia to play to handicap.
The course is open to the public seven days a week, though tee times can be limited by club and open competitions. Saturday is members' day, Tuesday is ladies' day and the Wednesday Scroungers play from midday. Public tee times are booked online, and the club welcomes visiting clubs on weekends. Men need a collared shirt tucked in with tailored trousers or shorts and a belt, and soft spikes only; singlets, denim and high-visibility clothing are not allowed.
Practice facilities include a 180-metre driving range, a short game area for bunker and pitch shots, and a putting green. Coaching is offered by PGA professional Greg McClurkin of Full Swing Golf Academy, including group clinics and private lessons. The licensed clubhouse serves sandwiches, rolls and hot meals on request and caters for functions; BYO alcohol is not allowed.
