About the course
El Caballo Golf Club is on the Great Eastern Highway at Wooroloo, in the Darling Range hills east of Perth and about 40 minutes beyond Midland. The 18-hole course runs through bushland with views and wildlife, including kangaroos all year and blue wrens in spring.
The course plays to par 72, with four par 3s and four par 5s, and measures about 5770 metres from the competition tees, with shorter men's and ladies' tees. It is a placement course rather than a long one, with eight lakes, rock drains, ponds, doglegs and bunkers. Most greens are raised and well guarded, and several slope sharply.
- 3rd: a 448-metre par 5 that doglegs right.
- 7th: a long par 4 of 392 metres, uphill to a raised green with water on the right.
- 12th: the shortest hole, a 139-metre par 3 to a steeply raised green.
- 14th: the hardest hole, a 499-metre par 5 with steep drops left and behind the green.
- 17th: a par 4 that bends right around a lake.
The course is open to the public, and weekdays are usually quiet with little waiting on the tee. Weekday green fees are $40 for 18 holes and $35 for nine, with lower seniors' rates on weekdays; weekends and public holidays cost more. An electric cart is $20 a seat on weekdays and $25 on weekends, and club hire is $15. Bookings are taken by phone.
The pro shop sells clubs, accessories and clothing, and the club caters for corporate and group events. Drinks are served after play under a special facility liquor licence, with pies and snacks available.
