About the course

Burns Golf Club Belconnen is at 140 Britten-Jones Drive in Holt, in Canberra's north-west, and is run by the Canberra Burns Club. The parent club was formed in 1924 to foster Scottish culture in the new capital, and its history records that it helped establish Royal Canberra Golf Club in those early years.

The 18-hole course runs along tree-lined fairways with a series of water carries. From the blue tees it measures 5,975 metres, and the pars add up to 72 with the 16th taken as a par 4 (the club lists it as a par 4 or 5). The opening hole is a 465-metre par 5, and the round finishes with a short par 3 up the hill.

  • 2nd: a 307-metre par 4 where a tee shot short of the gully sets up a pitch; going for the green is a gamble.
  • 14th: a 118-metre par 3 across water to a flat green, where the wind complicates club choice.
  • 17th: the longest hole, a 480-metre par 5 climbing to an elevated green.
  • 18th: a 134-metre par 3 played uphill to a small, flat green.

Non-members are welcome to play social rounds and can book tee times online after registering as a public player, but the course is closed to them while members' competitions are on. Visitors with a Golf Australia handicap can also enter club competitions, including a weekly Thursday visitors' competition, by paying the green and competition fees. Green fees are $40 for 18 holes and $30 for nine on weekdays, and $50 and $40 on weekends. Twilight golf for as many holes as you like costs $25. Non-members pay $50 for a cart for 18 holes and $40 for nine.

The pro shop opens from 6.30am on weekdays and 6am on weekends, and the resident PGA professional offers lessons, coaching packages and club fitting. The clubhouse has the Pebble & Stick bistro, open daily for lunch and dinner, along with a bar, TAB and big screens for sport.
