About the course
Federal Golf Club was founded in 1933, and its first fairways lay on ground that is now under Lake Burley Griffin. With that land set aside for the lake, the club reopened in 1949 on the western slopes of Red Hill, in bushland about two kilometres from Parliament House with views across to the Brindabella Ranges.
The 18-hole course is par 72 from the men's tees and about 6,257 metres from the blues. It has Santa Ana couch fairways and bentgrass greens protected by bunkers, and ponds come into play on the 1st, 7th and 8th.
- 1st: a 505-metre par 5 heading slightly downhill, with a fairway bunker on the left and a pond beyond it.
- 8th: a 154-metre par 3 over a pond to a narrow, heavily bunkered green.
- 12th: a 197-metre par 3 from a raised tee across a gully to an elevated green.
- 18th: the index 1 hole, a 386-metre par 4 that climbs all the way to a sloping green with two deep bunkers.
Visitors and touring groups are welcome in set social times that vary by day around members' competitions. Visitor tee sheets open seven days ahead, and earlier bookings go through the pro shop by email. Under fees in place since 1 October 2025, Tuesday and Thursday rounds cost $85 for 18 holes and $50 for nine. Monday is $55 and $45, and Friday, Sunday and public holiday afternoons are $95 and $55. Twilight golf for unlimited holes after 3.30pm costs $45 to $55, and it is the only social option on Wednesday and Saturday. Every round carries a $5 levy, and carts are $50 for 18 holes and $30 for nine. Denim, tracksuits and drawstring trousers are not allowed on the course.
The practice range uses reduced-flight balls and has a 180-metre limit, with buckets at $16 and $10, plus a putting green and a short-game area. PGA coaches run lessons and clinics, and the pro shop opens seven days. The clubhouse restaurant looks over the 18th green and opens daily from 7am to members and the public.
