About the course

Royal Canberra Golf Club dates from 1913, when a few golfers laid out a nine-hole course near the site of the future city centre. After a spell on a sand-green layout shared with the Acton racecourse, the club was given a new course at Acton in 1926 on the banks of the Molonglo River, and King George V granted the Royal title in 1933. With Acton set to be flooded for Lake Burley Griffin, the club moved in 1962 to Westbourne Woods in Yarralumla, an arboretum where a golf course had first been proposed in 1945 as a way of keeping the trees watered. The club remains custodian of the arboretum.

There are 27 holes, played as three par 72 courses from the blue and white tees. Westbourne (holes 1 to 18) was designed by John Harris in 1962 and renovated by OCM in 2016. Yarralumla uses holes 10 to 27, and Brindabella holes 19 to 9, with Thomson, Wolveridge and Perrett credited for the 1997 work. On the men's card Westbourne measures about 6,400 metres and finishes with a 217-metre par 3 and a 502-metre par 5. The course has hosted the 2013 Australian Women's Open, the ANZ Tour Championship from 1998 to 2000 and the 1988 ESP Open, won by Greg Norman.

Royal Canberra is a private members' club. Members of reciprocal clubs can play after sending a letter of introduction before booking, and a limited number of visitor times are offered through a request form on the website. Carts with GPS cost $50, and hire clubs are $60 for 18 holes and $30 for nine. Denim and tracksuits are not permitted anywhere on club property.

Practice facilities include a 280-metre driving range, a short-game area with several target greens, two putting greens and a two-bay indoor training centre. The golf shop opens daily from 6am, PGA professionals offer TrackMan lessons and club fitting, and the restaurant serves lunch from Tuesday to Sunday and dinner on Friday evenings.
