About the course
Fairbairn Golf Club sits on the north-east corner of Canberra Airport at 35 Laverton Avenue and is run as a not-for-profit public course. It began in 1953, when volunteer RAAF personnel built a six-hole course with sand greens on spare land at RAAF Base Fairbairn. In the 1960s it grew to nine holes with grass greens, laid with turf from the old Royal Canberra course, and play was largely limited to serving personnel. The club became the ADF Golf Club in 1998, was incorporated as Fairbairn Golf Club in 2004 and signed a formal licence with Defence in 2010. The government has since put the site up for divestment, and the club is running a petition to keep it as a golf course. Golf NSW named it the 2025 Country Golf Club of the Year.
The course is 18 holes, par 70, and the club reports more than 40,000 rounds a year.
The public can play social golf every day: from 7am on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, from midday on Wednesday, 1pm on Saturday and 10am on Sunday. Bookings are essential by phone or email, and players pay at the clubhouse at least 15 minutes before teeing off. Weekday green fees are $45 for 18 holes and $32 for nine. On weekends and public holidays social play is 18 holes only, at $54, or $40 for twilight golf from 4pm. Carts cost non-members $44 for 18 holes and $30 for nine, with pull buggies $5 and club hire $10. Visitors with a Golf ID handicap can book into most competitions up to seven days ahead, though Saturday entries need the club's approval. Alcohol cannot be brought onto the course but is sold in the clubhouse.
Practice facilities include a 200-metre driving range with a chipping green and bunker, upgraded in 2024, where a full bucket is $12 and a half bucket $6. There are also two practice greens and two warm-up nets. PGA professionals offer lessons and clinics.
