About the course
Avalon Golf Course is a nine-hole public course in Avalon Beach on Sydney's Northern Beaches, a few minutes' walk from the village shops and Avalon Beach. Clearing of the land began in 1924, the layout was designed by Dan Soutar, and the course opened in October 1926. It began as a private course and became public after the Second World War, and Warringah Council bought it in 1956. The clubhouse, former kiosk and greenkeeper's cottage date from the 1920s and are heritage listed, and in recent years the tees have been renovated and much of the course replanted with local native species.
The nine holes play to par 32 over about 1,790 metres, with five par 3s, three par 4s and a par 5. The ground is hilly, and several holes play noticeably uphill.
- 2nd: the signature hole, a 334-metre par 4 with a tee shot through a narrow chute of trees to a fairway that slopes sharply right to left.
- 3rd, 4th and 5th: three uphill par 3s in a row, from 96 to 128 metres, with water in front of the 3rd and a steep slope in front of the 5th.
- 8th: a 359-metre par 5 played straight uphill to a small green tucked behind trees.
The course is open to the public from sunrise to sunset every day, and bookings are made by phone. Green fees are $25 for nine holes and $32 for 18, with seniors (65 and over) at $21 and $25 and juniors at $14. Twilight golf costs $16 for unlimited holes from 3.30pm (4.30pm during daylight saving). Hire clubs ($20) and push buggies ($7) are available. The entrance is off The Crescent.
The pro shop and cafe open from 7am to 5pm daily (6pm in daylight saving), and the clubhouse has a bar and a function room. There is no practice range on site.
